Ecuadorian unions to mobilize against economic bill

Quito, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) Various union organizations will mobilize in Ecuador against the urgent economic bill proposed by President Daniel Noboa and whose approval is being debated in the National Assembly (Parliament).

The workers will hold a sit-in outside the Legislature to express their concern about the content of the regulations, in particular, the implementation of free zones, condoning of tax debts, and job insecurity.

The United Workers Front called on members, union organizations and the people in general to join the demonstration, which will also demand fair wages for the country’s economic reactivation.

The Ecuadorian Parliament will hold the second debate on the Economic Efficiency and Employment Generation Law this Tuesday with some changes suggested by the assembly members.

However, Viviana Veloz, first vice president of Parliament, recognized that the bill does not propose sufficient measures to resolve the catastrophic situation of public finances.

Former Minister of Economy Marco Flores agreed for his part that the reform does not solve the fiscal problem and even less the economic one; it lacks the effective capacity to provide the necessary permanent income to cover the recurring definancing of the General State Budget.

“If the Plenary approves this initiative, we will close 2023 with a law that affects workers and for the seventh time forgives debts, fines, interests and surcharges of large economic groups that fail to comply with their obligations to the State”, stated president of the United Workers Front José Villavicencio.
