When speaking in the Commission for Attention to Youth, Children and Equal Rights of Women of the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament), the head of State recalled that since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 there has been attention to these topics.
The president stressed that each State and Government policy must have a differentiated view for people and families who are in a vulnerable situation for women, children, young people, adolescents and the elderly.
He related that during his government visits to several provinces has taught him about the experiences of centers that have already developed the Program for the Advancement of Women, a fact that shows the great advances made in the area.
“This is a battle of values formation, of conscience, that a society does not tolerate gender violence,” reflected the President.
Díaz-Canel indicated that all the policies approved against gender violence and in the family scenario must be in the territorial development strategies, since this program includes the improvement of women, their employment possibilities and the training of young people.
He also emphasized the role that social workers play in prevention work in communities.
He recalled that these issues cut across the three pillars of the Cuban Government’s management: science and innovation, digital transformation and social communication.
At the meeting he revealed that the comprehensive strategy for the prevention of gender violence receives prioritized attention from the Government leadership.
The president of the Commission, Arelys Santana, highlighted that it is essential to guarantee that everything designed at country level is contextualized in each place, an action corresponding to the direction of the territories.
For her part, the general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women, Teresa Amarelle, called for using “gender mirrors in the communities” and increasing prevention work, “because violence is not only femicide, to avoid that we have to “Start working on the other types of violence that occur and are not seen.”
