According to the Presidency´s official website, during the meeting, held at the Havana International Conference Center (HICC), the Cuban leader expressed his gratitude for this visit that “gives us strength and energy”.
Díaz-Canel also said that it was a great pleasure to meet again with Reverend Pillay, and recalled their most recent meeting past September in New York.
“This visit is an expression of all support and sensitivity of the WCC towards the Cuban people,” said the Cuban leader.
Reverend Pillay, on the other hand, assured that it was a joy and a privilege for him to meet with President Díaz-Canel and acknowledged “they had been treated wonderfully well in Cuba”.
Pillay reiterated the WCC’s support for Cuba’s struggle against the U.S. blockade and its rejection of the inclusion of Cuba in the States Sponsor of Terrorism (SST) list.
Referring to the Cuban reality in terms of religion and based on his meetings with religious leaders, representatives of churches and the ecumenical movement, Pillay claimed: “what we have seen in Cuba confirms what we strongly believe and what we do not believe”.
