Cuba experiences a decrease in passenger transportation

Havana, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) Cuba experienced a decrease in passenger transportation capacities in all modalities and services in the last four years, it was known today in this capital.

During the work in committees of the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament), prior to the second ordinary period of sessions in its 10th Legislature, it was reported this situation has a negative impact on the social and economic life of the country.

When addressing the situation of passenger transportation at the national level in the Commission for Attention to Services of Parliament, the Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodríguez explained some of the aspects that directly affect the decrease in capacities and the quality of services.

Among them, the effects on the technical availability of means of transportation, the unstable supply of fuels and lubricants, the accumulated deterioration of infrastructure and the conditions in which workers work stand out.

He stressed that three objective factors influence this situation: the lack of timely financing in convertible currencies for support and investments, difficulties with the national currency and problems in state and non-state business management.

He specified that the measures applied to face these problems and the daily effort allowed the main missions to be fulfilled and solutions to be sought for each obstacle.

Rodríguez highlighted that the most complex situation is found in the services provided at the local and territorial level.

As a contribution to improving the mobility of the population, the minister pointed out that, until the end of October, 5,924 mechanical bicycles, 354 electric bicycles, 82 electric passenger tricycles and 886 cargo tricycles were manufactured or assembled, in addition to two thousand 116 electric motorcycles by the Minerva and Roselló plants, of the Ministry of Industries.

He announced that it is expected to generalize Havana’s experiences in road services with electric tricycles in the country, based on the acquisition of 275 of these means with own funds generated with the financing scheme.

Likewise, he explained that the country is working on the implementation of general directives for the prevention and confrontation of crime, corruption, illegalities and social indiscipline in the Cuban Railway system.
