Costa Rica to reach 900 homicide cases in 2023

San Jose, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) The toll of homicides in Costa Rica surged in 881, after a weekend where 11 more violent deaths were reported.

For several years, homicide statistics in Costa Rica have been on the rise and local authorities estimate this number will rise to 900 by the end of 2023.

Officials of the Judicial Investigation Organism (OIJ) informed Teletica news that, a few days before the end of the year, the country counts 262 homicides more compared to 2022, which reported 619 at this date.

Of the seven Costa Rican provinces, San José tops the list of highest number of deaths with 215, followed by Limón city (211) and western Puntarenas (142).

Costa Rica, advanced democracy and attachment to the care of nature, is experiencing a tortuous year given insecurity.

Even though authorities are currently working to address homicides, the OIJ demands more budget to strengthen the organization, and the Executive together with Congress, despite their disagreements on this issue, seek to adapt laws to control this situation.
