Havana, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan triple jumper Yulimar Rojas, Cuban wrestler Luis Orta and Brazil's football team Fluminense keep a wide lead on Saturday in Prensa Latina's annual sports poll, one week before closing.

Rojas and Orta were voted by the Guerrillero newspaper and Guamá radio, both media outlets from the western Cuban province of Pinar del Río, while the latter chose the Fluminense club as the best team of the year.

The Venezuelan triple jumper has received 25 votes, and is followed at a distance by Cuban canoeist Yarisleidis Cirilo with five, including the one awarded to her by Chile’s El Siglo, which also acknowledged Jamaican sprinter Shericka Williams, Orta, baseball player Ronald Acuña and the Mexican women’s soccer team, Pan-American gold medalist in Santiago 2023.

In the men’s sector, Orta, a world, Pan American and Central Caribbean champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, has so far received 23 votes, widely separated from Acuña, with six, while in the dispute for the most outstanding team, Fluminense leads (21), escorted by the national teams football from Argentina (six) and Mexico (three).

A total of 41 media outlets from the continent have sent their votes in this 59th edition of the traditional Prensa Latina poll, the first of which was won by Cuban sprinter Enrique Figuerola in 1964, the year in which he became Olympic runner-up in the 100-meter dash.
