Prepared by the Community Service Society organization, the third Unheard survey of 2023 highlighted that Latinos, blacks and single mothers are the ones who bear the brunt.
When addressing what are the major limitations to being able to get ahead and have a better life, those interviewed referred to the need for affordable housing and access to health.
Forty-five percent of respondents see the lack of housing as a barrier to financial peace of mind, while 52 percent said an affordable home is their first concern.
The findings were even more disturbing among low-income working mothers, as 62 percent of them indicated that this lack of affordable housing was the main barrier that limited them from being able to get ahead this year.
Such a social problem “has a multifaceted impact on the lives of New Yorkers; It forces households to divert a greater proportion of their limited income towards housing,” the Community Service Society warned in its report.
Lack of access to medical care is the second priority concern for New Yorkers, as 27 percent declared this point as their greatest limitation to progress, while poor access to more affordable universities, with 23 percent, was another concern of the participants in the opinion poll.
They also spoke, especially mothers, of emergencies such as greater access to child care services within the reach of possibilities.
