In an interview with Prensa Latina, the activist and young veterinarian referred to the implications of the decision of the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), issued last November.
This international entity recommended suspending the trade of different shark species from Ecuador, a decision that will come into effect in the last week of March 2024, said Cely, who two years ago urged the authorities to set limits to avoid this sanction.
The idea was that Ecuador, as a way of self-management, would control, in a self-management manner, everything related to these maritime species in ports, customs, at the level of inspections, with a regulation to the fishing law, added the specialist.
At that time -she recalled- the national institutions considered that everything was fine and now Cites agrees with us, because too many things are being done wrongly in the country regarding the sustainability and protection of sharks.
