UN Secretary-General praises COP28 outcomes

Dubai, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres praised on Wednesday the outcomes of the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28), whose final declaration called for the phase-out of fossil fuels.

“COP28 took place at a decisive moment in the fight against climate change,” the secretary-general wrote on his X profile, and stressed that the need to phase out fossil fuels is being recognized for the first time after many years in which the debate was blocked.

“It is important that the outcome of the Global Assessment reaffirms the need to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C, which requires drastic emission reductions in this decade,” Guterres added.

In another message on X, the head of the UN underlined the inevitability of this decision to preserve the home of all humanity.

The UN secretary-general argued that, according to science, global warming will not be limited to 1.5ºC without the phase-out of fossil fuels.

On Wednesday, participating countries adopted the so-called United Arab Emirates Consensus as the final document of COP28, which makes an unprecedented reference to the transition away from all fossil fuels.

As an outcome of COP28, a new specific target was set to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030.
