The UN food agency informed that almost 18 million people are at risk of food insecurity from October 2023 to February 2024, with more strength in Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan, which shows a rapid evolution of the crisis.
In this context, WFP believes that if there is no significant increase in food assistance, famine-like conditions could occur in some areas when the dry season arrives in May.
The UN agency adds that some five million people are currently in emergency levels.
WFP urges the parties to the conflict to call an immediate ceasefire to save millions of citizens. The war in Sudan has completely devastated the country and generated one of the most complex humanitarian crises in Africa, leaving thousands of dead, injured, and displaced.
Clashes in Sudan erupted on April 15 due to disagreement amid an integration process between the Rapid Support Force (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, vice-president of the Sovereign Transitional Council (STC) within the Armed Forces, and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Army and president of the STC.
