Police protects Congress in Mexico City for prosecutor’s ratification

Mexico City, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) The Mexico City Congress dawned on Wednesday with the protection of the police in anticipation of riots due to the beginning of discussion for the ratification of prosecutor Ernestina Godoy, which was rejected by the opposition.

As an act of provocation, opposition legislators arrived with suitcases at the City Congress to spend the night in the building between Donceles Street and Allende Street to make people believe they would be denied access to the chamber, which the ruling congressional group has denied.

The first to arrive were the National Action Party (PAN) lawmakers, some of whom, including Federico Semerena, took their suits to prepare for the session.

Amid a security fence around the local Congress, legislators from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) also arrived, led by its coordinator, Ernesto Alarcón.

According to the law, two-thirds of the legislators’ votes are necessary to ratify Ernestina Godoy for another four-year term.

The ratification process requires a majority of 44 votes from the 66 legislators in the Congress of Mexico City.

The MORENA party and its allies have only 38 votes. The vote of Congressman Víctor Hugo Lobo, who recently resigned from the PRD, could be added.
