Guterres welcomes regional effort for peace in Sudan

United Nations, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, today welcomed the steps of progress within the Extraordinary Assembly of Heads of State and Government of East Africa to achieve peace in Sudan.

The high representative described the developments during the meeting of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development for that region, held in Djibouti on December 9, as encouraging.

A statement released by his spokesperson reiterated the UN chief’s commitment to supporting the mediation efforts of African partners and working with all other stakeholders to end the war and restore peace in Sudan.

At the same time, he warned of the parties’ lack of will so far to cease hostilities, which has caused untold suffering to civilians.

The text reaffirmed the willingness of the personal envoy of the Secretary General for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, to collaborate with all those involved and partners to promote peace in the African nation.

According to Sudanese media, the Assembly achieved the commitment of the Sudanese belligerents for a cessation of hostilities, considered a crucial step to address the aspirations of the civilian population in the midst of the conflict.

The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority, Workeh Gebeyehu, announced on Saturday that the President of the Sovereign Sodano Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, agreed to sign an agreement to cease the conflict.

The two key figures in the Sudanese crisis agreed to meet within 15 days to discuss confidence-building measures and pave the way for a political process.
