The epicenter of the tremor originated 50 kilometers east of the Jeremie city, capital of the Grand Anse department and was also perceptible in Les Cayes in the South department.
The telluric movement caused panic among the population of the area who quickly left their homes, however, authorities reported no damage so far.
Haiti’s geographic location makes it prone to events of this type as it is situated at the convergence of two tectonic plates.
In September, the Mines and Energy Office and the Technical Unit of Seismology confirmed 62 earthquakes, an increase of 47 percent over the previous month.
The report, which evaluates data from local networks such as Ayiti seisme and UTS, as well as regional ones from Cuba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, indicated that the telluric movements had a magnitude on the Richter scale of between 0.8 and 3.8 degrees.
