Forest fires declared under control in Valparaiso, Chile

Santiago de Chile, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) The three main forest fires that broke out over the weekend in the Chilean region of Valparaiso are under control, Sofia Gonzalez, the presidential delegate in that area, said today when making an assessment of the situation.

She highlighted the coordinated work between the Fire Department, the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) and other institutions, which limited the damage to seven injured and 13 destroyed houses.

There are currently four alerts in force in Valparaíso, two yellow and two red, but the fires are contained and the risk to people and their property has been significantly reduced, González added.

The commune of Limache was the most affected by the fire, which consumed 820 hectares of forest and grassland and for some hours was completely surrounded by flames.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service reported that nationwide fires destroyed 3,446 hectares in the first days of the summer season.

In addition to those that occurred in Valparaíso, there were other intense events in the Metropolitan and O’Higgins regions and the authorities recalled that there are weather conditions for the multiplication of these phenomena.
