Int´l organizations lash out at UNSC inability to protect Gaza

onu-banderas-2
Ramallah, Dec 9 (Prensa Latina) Several international humanitarian organizations on Saturday criticized the failure of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to adopt a cease-fire resolution in the Gaza Strip.

We are dismayed by the UNSC´s failure to authorize a cease-fire resolution, the humanitarian organizations said in a joint statement. Had it been approved, they stressed, this would have provided much-needed respite for civilians in Gaza, who are under constant Israeli bombings.

This was a missed opportunity to stop violence, noted the message, signed, among others by CARE International, Save of Children, Oxfam and the Norwegian Refugee Council.

“We are two months into the crisis and total siege of Gaza, now the deadliest place in the world for civilians. No place is safe,” they stressed.

In this regard, they denounced that humanitarian workers are unable to operate effectively and safely because of Israeli shelling and attacks on the entire coastal enclave.

Incoming aid supplies are severely restricted and do not even represent a fraction of what is needed.

“People have no access to food or water, the health system collapsed, and attacks on hospitals left much of Gaza’s population without access to any treatment.”

It is unjustifiable for UNSC members to veto a cease-fire resolution when the humanitarian case for a ceasefire is so clear, they criticized, alluding to the United States, which rejected the draft on Friday.
