Cuba kicks off 11th Conference on Disasters

Havana, Dec 8 (Prensa Latina) Disasters force human beings to reflect and work more on climate change, according to a delegate to the 11th Conference on Disasters and the 7th International Conference of Firefighters.

“The effects of climate change bring more disasters to nations, and as this problem worsens, and is not solved urgently, the risks are greater, as shown by extreme weather events,” as stressed by Roger Medina, Director of the Civil Defense Risk Reduction Management Center of the Cacocum municipality, in the eastern province of Holguín.

This conference is important for us, because it prepares us scientifically on possible scenarios and actions aimed at reducing risks and vulnerabilities in the territories, Medina told Prensa Latina.

Cacocum has been too affected by floods and wildfires given harsh droughts, and here we acquire the knowledge of how to face those disasters, and convey the advances to colleagues and managers to take the necessary measures, he commented.

The work of the Cuban Civil Defense over all these years is an important task, first of all, in saving human lives and protecting the economy’s resources.

It is also worth highlighting the preparation received by the citizens, the decision-making bodies to know how to act at the right time ahead of any extreme natural phenomenon, said Medina.
