Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a statement that Shoukry and Guterres had a phone talk on Wednesday to analyze the situation in the coastal enclave, which has been under bombardment for 62 days.
The text stated that the two officials discussed the deterioration of the humanitarian and security situation in the Strip and the diplomatic measures to restore the ceasefire.
During the meeting, Shoukry, who is visiting Washington, detailed Cairo’s diplomatic contacts with several regional and international actors to stop the conflict and reiterated his country’s total rejection of Israeli plans to displace the Gazan population.
Guterres, in turn, praised Egypt’s role in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and its efforts to enable the entry of aid into that territory through the Rafah crossing.
As part of his stay in the US capital, Shoukry met with members of the Congressional Friends of Egypt Caucus in the US Congress on Wednesday, with whom he discussed the situation in Gaza.
