UNESCO inscribes six elements on urgent safeguarding list

Kasane, Botswana, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee today approved the incorporation of elements from Paraguay, Malaysia, Türkiye, Mozambique, Syria and Djibouti on the list of those requiring urgent safeguarding measures. At the beginning in the city of Kasane, Botswana, of the 18th session of the body of 24 member states, it gave its approval to the ancestral and traditional techniques for the preparation of the Poncho Para'í of 60 lists of the city of Piribebuy, in Paraguayan territory.

Likewise, he supported Malaysia’s candidacy for Mek Mulung, a traditional form of dance-drama from the north of the country, and the traditional knowledge, methods and practices related to the cultivation of olive trees on Turkish soil.

The Mozambican dance Ingoma Ya Mapiko, the traditional Syrian glass blowing and the xeedho delicacy in Djibouti, offered by mothers-in-law to their newly married sons-in-law in the Somali community, complete the list of elements that demand urgent safeguarding measures.

UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage requiring urgent action identifies living heritage whose survival is threatened.

With the six additions, there are 81 registered elements.

In a session that highlights the 20th anniversary of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Committee will analyze a total of 56 candidatures, including 45 applications for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
