Cuba exchanges inclusion experiences with universities

Matanzas, Cuba, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) The exchange of experiences and an analysis on the development of the project Advancing towards an inclusive and accessible higher education in Cuba, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica (Access) arouses interest today in the Cuban resort city of Varadero.

The Occidental Arenas Blancas hotel, (Western White Sands) located in Cuba’s main sun and beach tourist destination, is hosting today and until tomorrow the final conference of the Access project, which includes in its program students from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica who, through modern practices of inclusion, training and corporate work, receive studies that contribute to their professional training.

According to the coordinator of the project at the Alicante University (UA) Spain, the coordinating university of higher education, Noelia Lopez, Access began its activities on January 15, 2020 with the main objective of improving the accessibility of people with disabilities to higher education studies.

Achieving an impact at the policy level is a premise of the project, which in its first stage was aimed at collecting qualitative research data to analyze the panorama of universities in Cuba, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic in terms of incorporation and existing facilities for people with disabilities, she added.

Lopez pointed out that guaranteeing adequate learning conditions and outlining strategies among the universities of the three countries involved and adding the presence of others from Latin America and Europe is one of the purposes of the initiative for benefiting a greater number of individuals.

Among the purposes of Access are to establish a general national and regional network to consolidate the interest in inclusion policies at the higher education level and thereby increase inter-institutional relations and achieve new links between Latin American universities and European counterparts.
