According to The Citizen newspaper, the weekend’s rains, a result of the El Niño phenomenon, have caused extensive flooding in the Manyara region until now, where the Government has deployed search and rescue teams in Katesh and nearby villages.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu stated that rescue efforts are continuing and expressed her condolences for what happened in Katesh village, Hanang district, Manyara region.
Specialists warned that the situation could worsen as this climatic phenomenon is estimated to last until April 2024.
Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan, is still recovering from the effects of the worst drought in 40 years.
Normally, the Greater Horn of Africa has a short rainy season, from October to December. However, due to climate change, some countries and areas were predicted to experience increased rainfall, described as wetter than usual conditions
