Paraguay reports 24 deaths and 11,000 patients with dengue fever

Asunción, Dec 4 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan health authorities reported 24 deaths and some 11,000 sick people from dengue fever so far this year, ABC Color newspaper reported today.

The statistics for the period include 1,000 confirmed cases and 3,548 notifications of patients suspected of carrying the virus during the last 20 days, the General Directorate of Health Surveillance added in its latest weekly epidemiological report, quoted by the newspaper.

According to the health institution, 64 % of these numbers of patients infected or likely to suffer from the disease (transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes) affect the southwestern areas of Asuncion, Central, Caaguazu and Itapua, according to the health institution. Statistics show there are three times more confirmed cases and notifications of suspected cases of carrying the virus than before the 20-day evaluation period, the report of this entity of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare explains.

“The tests reveal a greater increase in notifications in the southwestern metropolitan area (Asunción and Central), Guiará, Cordillera, Paraguarí and Ñeembucú and in the easternmost and northernmost departments of Itapúa, Caaguazú, Alto Paraná, San Pedro, Concepción, Canindeyú, Amambay, and Presidente Hayes”, highlights the weekly report.
