The Assembly granted President Nayib Bukele and Vice President Félix Ulloa a leave of absence on Thursday evening to campaign for reelection if they win the February 4, 2024, elections.
As of this Friday, Rodríguez de Guevara will be the first woman to hold the Presidency of El Salvador in the history of this country, where male chauvinism has always been a brake on the rise of women in politics.
An estimated 67 lawmakers voted in favor and 11 against to approve Bukele’s request for leave, whose reelection violates what the Constitution establishes.
Rodríguez de Guevara has been Bukele’s close collaborator for years since his political start as mayor.
She also served as a financial manager of the Presidency, president of the board of directors of the National Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM), and a municipal treasurer of San Salvador.
