Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Chile are the nations with the most films in this edition, and the film of the opening evening will be The Settlers, which will represent Chile at the Oscars, according to what the organizers informed the day before at a press conference.
The race for the Coral Awards will be held under the title ‘Luz verde acción!’ (Green Light Action!) and collateral prizes will be awarded.
Tania Delgado, director of the event, commented that the public will also be able to enjoy feature films from Spain, the United States, Finland, Hungary, Belgium, Iran, Italy, Japan, France and India, among other countries.
She reaffirmed that the festival continues to highlight the decolonizing and emancipating themes of Latin American and other countries in its efforts to show the problems suffered by their societies in the face of the capitalist boom.
Delgado informed that the films in competition will cover themes such as family relationships, violence, gender, youth, adolescence, historical facts and diversity, among others.
Film lovers will also be able to see films from Cuba, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
There will be novelties, tributes and special moments with tributes to Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel, on the 40th anniversary of his death, and French actor Max Linder.
A tribute will be paid to the remembered Cuban filmmaker Tomas Gutierrez Alea on the 30th anniversary of the premiere of his film Strawberry and Chocolate, the only Cuban film nominated for an Oscar (1993).
The special presence of Maria Novaro, filmmaker and president of the Mexican Film Institute; Agnes Jaoui, French filmmaker, screenwriter and actress; and Sergi López, Spanish actor, was announced.
The Juan Padron Animation Forum will be held from December 9 to 11 at the Animation Studios of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (Icaic).

Llega con luz verde Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana
La Habana, 30 nov (Prensa Latina) El 44 Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana hoy sigue la luz verde para comenzar, del 8 al 17 de diciembre, con una selección de 199 películas concursantes de casi una veintena de países.
México, Argentina, Brasil y Chile son las naciones con más filmes en esta edición, y la cinta de la velada inaugural será Los colonos, la cual representará a Chile en los Oscar, según informaron la víspera los organizadores en conferencia de prensa.
Bajo el llamado de ‘Luz verde áacción!’ se desarrollará la carrera por los premios Coral y se entregarán lauros colaterales. Tania Delgado, directora del evento, comentó que el público también podrá disfrutar de largometrajes de España, Estados Unidos, Finlandia, Hungría, Bélgica, Irán, Italia, Japón, Francia e India, entre otras naciones. Reafirmó que el festival continúa poniendo de relieve la temática descolonizadora y emancipadora de los países latinoamericanos y de otros confines en su empeño de mostrar los problemas que sufren sus sociedades ante el empuje capitalista.
Delgado informó que las cintas en concurso abarcarán temas como relaciones familiares, violencia, género, juventud, adolescencia, hechos históricos y la diversidad, entre otros.
Los amantes del séptimo arte podrán apreciar también películas de Cuba, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, República Dominicana, Uruaguay y Venezuela, según se conoció.
Habrá novedades, homenajes y momentos especiales con tributos al realizador español Luis Buñuel, en el aniversario 40 su muerte, y al actor francés Max Linder.
Será homenajeado el recordado cineasta cubano Tomás Gutiérrez Alea al cumplirse 30 años del estreno de su película Fresa y chocolate, única cinta cubana nominada al Oscar (1993).
Se anunció la presencia especial de María Novaro, cineasta y presidenta del Instituto de Cine de México; Agnés Jaoui, cineasta, guionista y actriz francesa, y Sergi López, actor español.
El Foro de Animación Juan Padrón se realizará del 9 y al 11 de diciembre en los Estudios de Animación del Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (Icaic).
