Cuban poet wins 2023 Samuel Feijóo Poetry Prize

Domingo-Alfonso
Havana, Nov 30 (Prensa Latina) Domingo Alfonso, one of the representatives of the 50's poetry generation in Cuba, won the 2023 Samuel Feijóo Environment Poetry Prize.

The prize, awarded by the Economic Society of Friends of the Country and its Cultural Section annually, was granted to Domingo Alfonso, given that in his work, “the environment assumes an unusual appearance as, instead of the bucolic space, the author recreates the urban environment that interacts with the individual and the couple fruitfully, even printing certain notes of humor and eroticism at times.”

This is how the jury members Rafael Acosta, Emmanuel Tornés, and Fernando Rodríguez describe Alfonso’s texts. “Poemas del hombre común” (1965), “Libro de buen humor” (1979), “Esta aventura de vivir” (1987), and “Antología casi final. En la ciudad dorada” (2003) stand out among his works.

Born in Matanzas province, the 88-year-old poet will receive the prize at the General Assembly of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country in January 2024, the institution stated in a press release.

According to the text, the Samuel Feijóo Environmental Poetry Prize has been awarded since 2007 to recognize the work of a Cuban poet who reflects environmental issues in his verses.

Poets Roberto Manzano, Alex Pausides, Jesús David Curbelo, Alpidio Alonso, Waldo Leyva, Ricardo Riverón, Renael González, Rolando López del Amo, Pedro Péglez, Virgilio López, and poetesses Dulcila Cañizares, Carmen Serrano, Nersys Felipe, and Nieves Rodríguez currently holds this prize.
