According to foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, these nations ‘must take credible steps’ to fulfill their commitment and support developing countries in finance, technology and capacity building, with the intention of meeting the temperature target of the Paris Agreement.

“China has exceeded the 2020 climate action targets ahead of schedule, it will make the world’s steepest cuts to carbon emissions intensity and complete the process from peak carbon emissions to carbon neutrality in the shortest possible time,” the spokesman added.

Wang made the remarks ahead of the upcoming 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), where the first global stocktaking will take place following the entry into force of the Paris Agreement.

The spokesman called on the most advanced nations to achieve net zero carbon emissions well before 2050 and to create space for developing countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

“We hope that COP28 will seize the global stocktaking as an opportunity to act on multilateralism with the United Nations at its core, fully address the concerns of developing countries, advance to a just green transition in a pragmatic way and respond to climate change with solidarity and cooperation,” he stressed.

The meeting is scheduled from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

At the COP28, China will advocate for real action, strengthen means of support and build a fair, cooperative and mutually beneficial global climate governance system, said the Foreign Ministry.
