Although the Agriculture authorities recognized that the productive results will not cover all the demand, it is an additional delivery to the national distribution that will reach the people of Sancti Spiritus.
Eduardo Jimenez, head of the Agricultural Department, said that in the current campaign, about 34 hectares are being planted with seed produced by local producers farmers.
In this regard, he acknowledged that it is an extraordinary experience to avoid the expense of acquiring national or imported seed.
He confirmed that in seven of the eight municipalities of the territory, except Trinidad, planting has been carried out early this month.
This year 12 new cultivators have joined, and there are others interested for the next harvest, he noted.
Producing this tuber in small areas for local self-sufficiency with the use of biological means is a requirement of the moment, given the limitations for the acquisition of the same abroad, he said.
It was known that the imported seed was planted in territories with irrigation machines to increase yields and achieve higher production to meet the population’s demands.
This is the third time, Jimenez commented, that this program is included in the province.
