“Young Palestinian women have been subjected to unspeakable abuses in Israeli prisons,” she told reporters waiting for her at her home in Jerusalem shortly after her release.
Jaabis was released at midnight along with 38 other Palestinian women and children as part of the second prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel.
“We´re ashamed to rejoice when all of Palestine is hurt,” said Jaabis who was behind bars for 11 years for allegedly attempting to kill Israeli soldiers.
On October 11, 2015, as she was returning from Jericho to Jerusalem, her car’s engine failed near the Al Za’ayem military checkpoint.
The military opened fire on the vehicle in fear of an attack, resulting in a gas cylinder explosion.
As a result, Jaabis suffered first- to third-degree burns, affecting 50 to 60% of her body, and she lost all her hand fingers and her face was disfigured.
However, the Israeli version claims that she attempted an attack on the checkpoint, for which she was convicted, an accusation she strongly rejects.
My wounds and my struggles are visible, I don’t need to talk about them, she stressed to the press.
She also expressed concern for other Palestinian women she met in prison, including girls who cried when she was released “because they have been subjected to so many abuses”.
On Saturday, other former female prisoners condemned torture and mistreatment in Israeli jails.
