The heartfelt words of Fidel Castro Smirnof, grandson of the commander in chief, Fidel, moved the audience the day before when he recalled the thousands of hours at his grandfather’s side, his teachings and his example.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Luther Castillo, trained at the Latin American School of Medicine and close to Fidel, highlighted his own story and recalled that a poor black teenager from the Garifuna people came out of poverty and was formed thanks to the ideas and work of the Cuban leader and today is part of the government of President Xiomara Castro.
The head of the first Cuban medical brigade that went to Honduras to help the people after the Hurricane Mitch (1998) Ellis Polanco recalled Fidel’s love and permanent concern for the Honduran people and the extraordinary work of Cuban doctors in the world.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Torres highlighted Fidel’s close relationship with Honduran leader Manuel Zelaya and the Cuban president’s brilliant reflections in defense of this Central American nation in the face of the 2009 coup d’état.
The conclusions were delivered by Cuban Ambassador Juan Roberto Loforte, who placed Fidel among the main leaders of the world in the 20th century.
The tribute was also attended by other heads of various portfolios of the Honduran Executive.
