The head of the United Nations said that “fossil fuel pollution is warming our planet, unleashing climate anarchy in Antarctica.”
What happened here is nothing left in this part of the world, Guterres assured.
At the same time, he pointed out, what happened thousands of kilometers away has a direct impact on this region.
The visit is already considered historic, because it is the first time that a UN leader has reached these latitudes.
President Boric considered it an honor for the country that the trip was made from Chile and the Magallanes region, defined as the natural gateway to Antarctica.
Both leaders arrived at the President Frei Air Base the day before and from there began making the scheduled trips today to the Collins Glacier, Kopaitic Island and the Covadonga Rada.
Tomorrow, at the end of the journey, they will be at the Professor Julio Escudero scientific base, where they will meet with scientists to share information about that frozen area of the planet.
Boric pointed out that the area contains 90 percent of the world’s ice and 77 percent of the available fresh water and, in addition, its seas are key in regulating the global climate.
For his part, Antonio Guterres addressed the leaders with whom he will meet next week during COP28 in Dubai, and asked for immediate action to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid climate chaos.
We must not let all hopes for a sustainable planet fade, he said.
