At a press briefing, Lacalle Pou urged free trade and stressed that Uruguay “will take every opportunity to break the logic of protectionism, first in our region and then to open up to the rest of the world.”
The Uruguayan head of State also defended the future of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China and said, “If all MERCOSUR decided to embark on it at once, perhaps it would be much better.”
At another point, he assured that he would offer Uruguay as a venue for a possible forum between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
“The world does not wait; it is increasingly dynamic, and we must be at the forefront of innovation and foreign trade. Uruguay is aware of what a free trade agreement with China means. Although we have challenges in this growth, we agree that it is for the good of our country,” Lacalle Pou stressed.
Beijing and Montevideo announced on Wednesday the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership following the meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Lacalle Pou at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Presidente uruguayo aboga por cooperación abierta con China
Beijing, 23 nov (Prensa Latina) El presidente uruguayo, Luis Lacalle Pou, abogó hoy aquí por la cooperación abierta entre China, su país y Latinaomérica, en contra del proteccionismo y a favor del Tratado de Libre Comercio.
En conferencia de prensa, el mandatario instó al libre comercio y subrayó que Uruguay “va a aprovechar cada oportunidad para romper la lógica del proteccionismo primero en nuestra región y después abrirse al resto del mundo”.
Además, defendió el futuro de un Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) con China y sostuvo que “si todo el Mercosur decidiera al mismo tiempo embarcarse en esto sería quizás mucho mejor”.
En otro momento aseguró que ofrecerá a Uruguay como sede de un eventual foro entre el gigante asiático y la Comunidad de Estados de Latinoamericanos y del Caribe (Celac).
“El mundo no espera, es cada vez más dinámico y hay que estar en la punta de la innovación y el comercio exterior. Uruguay es consciente de lo que significa un TLC con China y si bien tenemos desafíos en este crecimiento, coincidimos en que es para el bien de nuestro país”, enfatizó.
Beijing y Montevideo anunciaron la víspera el establecimiento de una asociación estratégica integral, luego del encuentro entre los presidentes Xi Jinping y Luis Lacalle Pou en el Gran Palacio del Pueblo.
