According to a presidential statement, Ramaphosa also “praised the State of Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the United States of America for mediating efforts to lead to the release of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli hostages.
Those efforts will also enable supplying humanitarian aid to Gaza, where the Israeli army’s incursion continues.
“As a member of the international community committed to peace, justice, and the rule of international law worldwide, South Africa welcomes the agreement reached,” the president said.
He added that he hoped this pause’s achievement would strengthen efforts to achieve a comprehensive end to the current conflict.
This pause, which unfortunately implies a possible resumption of the conflict at some point, must be accompanied by relentless efforts to find a lasting political solution to the decades-long challenge in the Middle East, Ramaphosa added.
The South African head of State finally reiterated in the press release his view that the Palestine people, Israel, and the region’s nations will work together with the international community to consolidate the rights, peace, and sustainable development of the Palestinian people as part of a multilaterally-backed two-state solution.
