Accompanied by several of his ministers, Luis Lacalle Pou met with the president of the largest Business Chamber of China, with whom he then opened the seminar “Uruguay-China Trade Relations: Deepening ties towards a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”.
The Uruguayan president described China as an important partner for his country and pledged to build new ties with China, according to the Chinese television channel CCTV.
The Uruguayan delegation, which includes some 40 business representatives, wants to elevate the ties to a strategic level and to achieve, among other interests, the signing of a new protocol for meat exports.
China is the largest buyer of Uruguayan meat, although in recent months its imports have decreased.
Ren Hongbin, president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, acknowledged that Uruguayan products such as quality meat, wine and dairy products have reached Chinese homes.
He added that automobiles, household appliances, basic necessities and other products from China have greatly enriched the material life of the Uruguayan people.
Tomorrow Lacalle Pou will be received by President Xi Jinping and both will lead the signing ceremony of bilateral agreements.
