Held at the Office of the Curator of the City of Matanzas, the meeting began its working sessions with the analysis of the Arqueo-Cuba project, which promotes decentralized cooperation on archeology and sustainability to face climate change.

The member of the organizing committee and representative of the Italian agency ARCS Arci-Culture-Solidali, Federico Mei, commented that the joint work between his entity and Cuba, through Arqueo-Cuba, has made it possible to make an analysis of Cuba’s archeological heritage, most of which is located in coastal areas.

The project, which began in 2021 and will last until 2024, has among its main objectives the search for solutions to climate change and its impact on the conservation of Cuba’s archeological heritage, he said.

Mei added that improving the knowledge of the sites, fostering the training of professionals linked to archeology and heritage and promoting an efficient management that also has an impact on cultural and sustainable tourism are some of the purposes of Arqueo-Cuba.

The interrelation of three components, the environmental, the archeological and the educational, are key guidelines in the management of Cuban heritage, which will be exposed during the 1st Cuban Congress of Historical Archeology, which will last until next Thursday, the representative of the Italian agency noted.
