Significance of Convention on Rights of the Child underscored in Cuba

Havana, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) The president of the National People's Power Assembly of Cuba (Parliament), Esteban Lazo, underscored the significance of the Convention on the Rights of the Child as it is celebrating its 34th anniversary on Monday.

The Parliament speaker recalled that the Cuba ratified that instrument in 1991 and has designed national policies integrating its postulates.

The date, also established as World Children’s Day, was celebrated on Monday with an “emotional” event in the National Capitol, the headquarters of the Cuban legislature, the ANPP reported in its X account.

Parliament Vice President Ana Marí Machado, lawmakers and representatives of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), based in Cuba, also participated in the celebration.

Participants in the meeting in Parliament denounced Israel’s genocide against Palestinians that “has silenced the voices” of some 5,000 Palestinian children with the complicity of the Government of the United States, lawmakers said.

Cuba’s reality privileges respect for and attention to the prerogatives of childhood, endorsed in the Constitution of the Republic and the Family Code.

The convention on the Rights of the Child is the international treaty most ratified by the countries that make up the United Nations (UN) and requires that each child grow up in an environment of happiness, love, understanding and equality and that their rights to life, health care and education be respected.

UNICEF is the only United Nations organization dedicated exclusively to the well-being of children, and its mandate promotes the protection of their rights and helping them to meet their basic needs.
