Born on October 8, 1947, Cuevas developed extensive works in support of the just causes of Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Bolivia, and other Latin American countries.
He led numerous campaigns, among them the struggle for the return of the child Elián, the release of The Five, and the rejection of the U.S. blockade against Cuba.
“International solidarity with the peoples of the Americas took with his revolutionary practice a dimension difficult to surpass,” a UBP statement said.
Since 2007 Juan Cuevas has held the Friendship Medal awarded by the Cuban Council of State at the proposal of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples.
