Syria and Cuba sign agreement for diplomatic cooperation

Damascus, Nov 19 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Diplomatic Institute and the “Raúl Roa García” Higher Institute of International Relations of Cuba signed a cooperation agreement today in this capital.

The document was signed at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the island’s ambassador here Luís Mariano Fernández and the director of the Syrian diplomatic institution, Imad Moustafa.

Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Mekdad, who was present at the signing, highlighted in a few words at the event the relations of friendship and brotherhood in the two nations and assured that this agreement constitutes recognition of the diplomatic and political relations that are previously solid and deep ties between the two countries.

This document constitutes another opportunity for the exchange of experiences and academic training between Cuban diplomats and their Syrian counterparts, said the head of diplomacy.

He highlighted that Havana and Damascus maintain excellent coordination in international forums and organizations, and exchange positions of support on all issues of national and international interest.

In turn, the Cuban ambassador said this agreement allows us to benefit from the experiences and knowledge accumulated on both sides in the exercise of diplomacy, as well as enriches the cultural, historical and political legacy to achieve greater impact on international relations.

These exchanges are important because our two nations adopt sovereign and independent positions that defend social justice, and differ from the hegemonic visions of the United States government and its allies, he explained.

The main objective of the agreement is to improve diplomatic capabilities, cultural exchange and academic cooperation between the two Institutes.

Furthermore, it aims to strengthen mutual understanding and establish a framework for collaboration, knowledge exchange and the development of diplomatic skills for the benefit of both institutes and their respective nations.

The clauses stipulate work to create an atmosphere of friendship and collaboration, while supporting the professional development of diplomatic personnel from both countries.

The text also stipulates the organization of diplomatic visits and consultations at various levels to enhance dialogue and cooperation on matters of mutual interest and concern.

These visits may involve exchanges between diplomats, experts and government officials to foster a deeper understanding of each country’s foreign policy priorities, the agreement predicts.

The document signing ceremony was attended by Vice Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh, the directors of the Foreign Ministry, the ambassadors and heads of the diplomatic missions of the Latin American countries accredited in Syria, as well as the Cuban diplomats in the island’s mission in Syria.
