Chilean parties begin campaign on constitutional project

Santiago de Chile, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) Chilean political parties will begin their campaigns on the draft Constitution to be submitted to a referendum on December 17th, when citizens will vote for the rejection or approval of the project.

According to the National Television Council, the electoral slot will be broadcast every day until December 14th and will last 30 minutes, distributed in two emission blocks.

The draft constitution was prepared by the Constitutional Council, where the extreme right and conservative sectors had an absolute majority and which is the subject of controversy in society, with many considering it more retrograde than the one imposed in 1980 during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

Some 15 parties will support the campaign against the draft, including the Christian Democrats, Socialists, Communists, Radicals, Liberals, Social Convergence, Humanist Action and Social Green Regionalist Federation.

In favor of the proposal are the Republican Party, the Independent Democratic Union, National Renewal and Evópoli, the People’s Party, Yellows for Chile and Democrats.

In the last hours, former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet expressed her rejection of the project and explained that it puts a limit on some issues, such as women’s rights, which were promoted for decades.

According to the former president, the draft does not ratify true state protection and a broad debate on critical issues, such as equal pay, reproductive rights and equal participation. “I have spoken with many people, both citizens and experts, and they all recognize the risks and dangers of the project,” she said, adding that unfortunately, instead of uniting, the proposal divides and also does not provide more security.

According to the most recent survey, carried out by the Black and White firm, 57 percent of Chileans would vote against the draft Constitution.
