According to the agenda published by the Palacio de La Moneda, the president will attend a meeting of business leaders and investors, and will later participate in the opening ceremony of the APEC 2023 Summit, which will be held at the Exploratorium Interactive Museum, in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, participated on Tuesday in the plenary session of Foreign Ministers and trade ministers of APEC.
The functionary pointed out that sustainability is one of the central axes of the foreign policy of the government of Chile, and gave as an example the promotion of the “Americas for the Protection of the Ocean” coalition, which establishes a network of protected areas from Canada to Chile. He also highlighted the ratification of the Escazú Agreement by Chile, which promotes access to information, participation, and justice in environmental issues.
APEC is a mechanism intended to ease growth, cooperation, trade liberalization, and investment in a group of 21 economies with coasts on the Pacific Ocean.
The organization’s goal is to create a sense of identity in the Asia-Pacific community and reduce differences between economies through sustainable growth.
APEC is not a treaty or agreement of obligations, decisions are adopted by consensus at annual meetings and compliance with commitments is assumed voluntarily.
