Nicaragua highlighted Cuba’s commitment to human rights and its resistance to the blockade imposed by the United States, which it described as criminal.
Laos also referred to Cuba’s actions to approve legislation that promotes and protects human rights, including the adoption of a new Constitution.
The Lebanese delegation praised Cuba’s excellent progress in protecting human rights and fulfilling the socioeconomic rights of all its citizens.
Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Jordan and Kenya, among others, noted the Cuban Government’s tireless efforts to guarantee civil rights, including the fight against racism and discrimination, as well as actions to address gender violence.
Mexico also highlighted the recent approval in Cuba of a women’s empowerment program, while Mongolia congratulated Cuba for the approval of its new Constitution, which was preceded by a process of discussion by the population.
The report was presented by Cuba previously in February 2009, April 2013 and May 2018.
The UPR is a unique mechanism of the HRC created in 2006 that stipulates that each Member State of the United Nations must undergo an analysis of its human rights performance every four and a half years.
