The secretary of the Coordinator, Wim Leysens, shared with Prensa Latina the expectations of the entity for the session that will take place on Thursday and Friday in the European Parliament of the Court and highlighted that prestigious jurists, experts, and witnesses from Europe and the United States would participate in it.
“We fully support the event and we feel privileged to host it in Brussels, because of the opportunity it represents to show concrete and compelling evidence of how the blockade against Cuba has serious, and even deadly, repercussions for the Cuban population,” Leysens said.
According to the activist, the court will also demonstrate that the blockade also impacts life in Europe: “We will denounce how banks obey US laws by rejecting financial transfers to Cuba, even when they are humanitarian donations,” he said.
Leysens also announced that evidence of the obstacles imposed by the United States blockade on Belgian-Cuban university cooperation will also be provided.
“We are sure that MEPs will hear the verdict and conclusions of this Court and we hope that the European Commission will take them as basis to define measures of concrete pressure for the United States to end its policy,” he said.
“The fact that the European Parliament is hosting this International Court is a symbol because the European Union condemns the blockade, but in reality, it is not capable of counteracting the extraterritorial sanctions of the United States or of protecting the companies, banks, and organizations of its members,” he stressed.
