Rejection of mining concessions, sustained demand in Panama’s streets

Panama City, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) The organizations of the National Alliance for the Rights of the Organized People (ANADEPO) of Panama announced that the protests against the mining concessions will continue today, 24 days after the beginning of the demonstrations.

As informed by the member associations of ANADEPO, the Alianza Pueblo Unido and leaders of some native peoples, the actions of street closures will continue until Law 406, which gave life to the contract between the State and Minera Panama, a subsidiary of the Canadian company First Quantum Minerals, is not repealed.

They also informed that on Wednesday, November 15, they will hold a rally against the appeal hearing presented by the defense of the alleged murderer of two people who were protesting against the mining concessions in the district of Chame, on November 7.

Also for Thursday November 16 and Monday November 20 they announced total blockades of avenues for 24 continuous hours, and ratified that the teachers’ strike will continue, according to La Estrella de Panamá newspaper.

The announcements come after the Panama Vale Más Sin Minería Movement marched the day before to the Supreme Court of Justice to demand the Executive Branch to pronounce itself in relation to the escalation of violent acts against demonstrators.
