Cuba denounces US blockade and its impact at UNESCO

Paris, Nov 9 (Prensa Latina) Minister of Education Naima Ariatne Trujillo on Thursday denounced at UNESCO the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States, and considered it the fundamental impediment to the country's development.

We appreciate the support of UNESCO to counteract the impact of this unjust policy. Its contribution has come through timely and responsible cooperation in all areas of the organization’s competence, she stated at the General Policy Debate of the 42nd General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The Cuban official took advantage of the multilateral meeting to acknowledge the international community for its overwhelming support at the UN General Assembly for a resolution that reflects the necessity for Washington to end its blockade of more than six decades.

A week ago, 187 UN member States voted in favor of Cuba’s resolution for the thirty-first time since 1992.

Trujillo noted that unilateral punishment has been imposed on an entire nation for so many decades.

She condemned the unilateral coercive measures imposed other peoples, and repeated the urgency of materializing the UNESCO call, and in particular of its Director General Audrey Azoulay, to prioritize international dialogue, cooperation and solidarity before differences and political conflicts.

Accompanied by Cuban Respresentative at UNESCO Yahima Esquivel, the head of the delegation at the 42nd General Conference ratified her country’s firm commitment to multilateralism and respect for the UN Charter and international law.
