Diaz urged Dominicans to stop the discourse inspired by resentment and confrontation, indicating that the time has come to recognize that their country cannot do without the neighboring nation and its market.
“We have to use a more constructive language, less dramatic, seek and promote solutions there,” he said in an interview with the Despertar Nacional program.
The diplomat recalled the importance of the Haitian market for the Dominican Republic and what it represents for the national economy.
In this regard, he argued that more than one billion dollars a year are exported to that market, where the Dominican Republic has a 9 to 1 advantage, “probably the most unequal bi-national market in the world, to the benefit of a single nation”, he added.
The Dominican ambassador noted that Haitian labor has been fundamental in key sectors of this country, including agriculture and construction.
He considered that this does not mean that all Haitian citizens enter the national territory, nor that we do not have policies of order, but we must recognize that they (Haitians) contribute.
…We cannot be saying negative things all the time, because otherwise, we will not find each other,” Bolivar Diaz, who is also a prominent journalist, argued.
