Cuba develops food measurement system

Havana, Nov 7 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is working on defining indicators to evaluate the national situation in terms of food sovereignty, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported today.

The information system also includes the sections on food and nutritional security, as well as the protection of the right to food, indicated the international organization, committed to technical assistance.

According to the source, the initiative responds to what is stipulated here in the Law on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security (SSAN Law), and its design involves the surveillance and information systems and public records of the agencies of the Central Administration of the State.

The National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) received technical assistance from FAO and support from the European Union with the purpose of facilitating the collection of ministerial proposals on measurement indicators for the SSAN Law, the entity detailed in a press statement.

In accordance with the legal norm, the periodic collection of information, its analysis, interpretation and dissemination is essential, with a view to guaranteeing control of what is regulated, the text recalled.

Therefore, ONEI and FAO work together to strengthen the measurement of food and nutritional security in the country, in processes such as data collection and statistical analysis.

In light of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the SSAN Law, this endeavor will not only strengthen Cuba’s capacity to measure and respond to the challenges of food and nutritional security, it will also contribute to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, said the FAO.
