Cuban medical collaboration strengthens Guatemala’s health system

Guatemala City, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuban doctors have strengthened Guatemala's health system in these last 25 years, mainly by caring for inhabitants of rural areas, an official source highlighted.

The complexity of the country lies in its intricate places, and the Cuban brigade members are there, the coordinator of international cooperation of the Ministry of Health, Jaime Anselmo Hernández, told Prensa Latina.

“Cuban professionals are in areas where they have to travel two or three hours, provide a medical care service, and return,” the functionary described. “Some of them spend the night in the villages, and that is where the population perceives their commitment, care, human quality, something priceless,” he emphasized.

“They see the Cuban doctors arrive in the community and they receive them with joy, and that is the message that we take to the authorities, that we are not only strengthening a service network but also leaving a mark,” he added.

Hernández thanked all the doctors who lent their efforts these 25 years, who gave up their efforts, shed tears, “because the situation between periods has been tough,” he acknowledged, after the commemoration on the occasion of the date.

In his opinion, Cuban doctors feel the communities or villages they assist as their home “and that is something very, very nice because although indeed they miss Cuba, they are welcomed with love, tenderness, and affection. (…) They in turn provide quality medical care, and warmth, which is what we are looking for, to be able to reach all those places where there is often a job offer for Guatemalans, but it is not available,” he noted.
