A Moroccan Foreign Ministry communiqué also deplored ‘the failure of the (UN) Security Council to assume its responsibilities’ and the ‘inability of influential countries to put an end to this catastrophic situation’.
The text goes even further when it notes that ‘Israel’s acts of escalation contradict international humanitarian law and common human values’.
In 2020 Morocco normalized diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv and announced that the two states had concluded agreements on cyber security, military and economic matters, much to the displeasure of its neighbor Algeria, which considers Israel its sworn enemy and maintains strained relations with Rabat.
At the time the official Moroccan communiqué was released, sources in Gaza put the number of Palestinians killed by the indiscriminate bombardment of the powerful Israeli army at more than 9,000, mostly civilians, women and children who are not belligerents.
