Costa Rican legislators suggest discussion of law to fight crimes

San José, Nov 3 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Costa Rican Legislative Assembly, Rodrigo Arias, and members of the Security and Drug Trafficking Commission proposed adjustments and renewed approaches to the law of execution of sentences, digital media reported today.

The penalty execution law is extremely important. It has to be studied in detail and has to be approved as soon as possible, Arias explained about this proposal, which seeks to curb the crime wave facing the country, with 760 homicides in 2023.

The bill is currently not among the priorities called by the Executive in the Extraordinary Sessions period that started on Wednesday, a cycle in which the deputies will give priority to bills of interest to the Government.

The proposal legally establishes the requirements for a person to have access to a regime of deprivation of liberty with benefits, which means out of prison, however, those convicted for organized crime, drug trafficking, homicide or femicide will not be able to apply for these benefits.

In the opinion of specialists, the aim is to establish more effective measures to confront and reduce crime, focusing on the rehabilitation and reinsertion of offenders, while strengthening security in our communities.
