Ana Jiménez de la Hoz, Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Representation of Spain, underscored before the United Nations General Assembly the crucial role of foreign trade and foreign investment in the drive towards modernization, reforms and sustainable growth.

For this reason, she reiterated, the bloc considers that the lifting of the blockade “could make the economic reforms more effective and facilitate the opening of the Cuban economy” and insisted on the respect for the UN Charter and the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the members of that organization.

She added that the blockade continues with restrictions on the island’s capacity to import pharmaceutical products and medical supplies, in addition to which the administrative and judicial sanctions also affect the economic interests of the European Union.
