Speaking before the UN General Assembly, the Chilean ambassador to the United Nations, Paula Narváez, declared that this siege and its extraterritoriality are an anachronism and must come to an end.
“What has been demonstrated throughout these more than 60 years of unilateral coercive measures is that the Cuban people can still survive thanks to their dignity, perseverance and hope”, she said.
The diplomat announced that her country would vote in favor of the resolution presented by Cuba to put an end to the blockade, a document that has the majority support of the UN member states.
Chile, committed to multilateralism, reaffirms its full support for the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter and international law, among them sovereign equality among States, non-intervention and non-interference in internal affairs, she said.
For more than 30 consecutive years, the General Assembly has been approved by an overwhelming majority resolutions calling for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America.
Chile does not agree with the imposition of unilateral sanctions of any kind, she warned.
The ambassador denounced that this siege has generated and continues to generate shortages and suffering for the entire Cuban population, limits and delays economic and social progress and prevents the achievement of the sustainable development goals.
