“Brazil disagrees with the imposition of unilateral sanctions of any kind,” the Brazilian representative said at the vote on the Cuban resolution against the blockade at the United Nations General Assembly.
He demanded that the United States normalize relations with Cuba, and recalled that the rejection of the blockade against the Caribbean island, since 1962, is “virtually an international consensus.”
He called for intensifying economic relations with Cuba, “the right path to be followed by all countries interested in supporting Cuba’s development and the improvement of the living conditions of millions of Cuban citizens.”
He alluded President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s statements when he said that Brazil will continue to denounce measures adopted without the backing of the United Nations Charter, such as the blockade imposed on Cuba and the attempt to classify that country as a sponsor of terrorism.
“Brazil will vote in favor of the resolution” condemning the US blockade against Cuba,” the representative concluded.
